Moisturized
"Crust is a crime."
Michele Honore
One of the first things people see when they look at you is your skin. So, it can be frustrating when you have skin problems. Many people hide skin problems on the body very well but its difficult to cover up facial issues. Lets talk skin for a second. The skin has two main layers, the epidermis and the dermis. Under these two layers is a layer called the subcutaneous layer which insulates the body and connects the skin to the body. Now I won't go into a serious skin lesson even though I want to really break it down (the health teacher in me). I will do that at a later date. I want to talk about a skin problem tonight that many people are choosing to ignore and live with, dry skin. Like my good friend Michele Honore says, "Crust is a crime."
As a skincare specialist, I am finding that people will skip lotion or moisturizer in a heart beat especially on their feet. Others are choosing to just live with their dry skin because they don't feel as if they have any other choice. Then, there are those that just don't care anymore. Taking better care of your skin should be a New Years resolution for everyone. We can all do better. You should care deeply for the skin on your body. Its your body's first line of defense and serves so many purposes. If you are discouraged and you have tried everything and nothing is working, don't give up. I do know that some people don't care either way. They don't mind walking around with biscuit heels and scaly legs. Sigh. But for those who desire change, here are a few tips to help you or someone that you may know.
1. Brrrrrrrr. Across the nation, Jack Frost and Elsa (for all of you youngsters who are using Google to find out who Jack is) are both "nipping" and "letting it go" all over the place. But hey, it is winter. Here in Hotlanta, cold weather is not welcomed. I like it warm personally. That's one of the benefits of the south. However, this type of weather can change our skin. Be sure to dress properly. Even if you live in place where you may not need the winter gear on a regular basis, keep gloves, hats, and scarves in the house. Cold weather also causes us to change the temperatures of our homes, which can dry out our skin as well. A humidifier is will keep moisture in the air in our homes. Its a must have for the winter. Try Honeywell.
2. I know couponing is in style and we need to save money but not all soaps are created equal. I don't care if it smells good either. You are going to have to get over that. Its time to switch to a mild, moisturizing soap. I am a soap snob. I love a luxury soap. You don't have to spend a ton of money but it may be time for a change. Try it. Please. Thank you! While we are talking soap, you have to let go of the super hot shower. Now, lets take this one in baby steps. I LOVE a steamy hot shower but its drying me and you out.
3. Repeat after me. Body Creams and Face Creams are my friends. You can't skip moisturizing your body. Its so easy to jump out of the shower, dry off, and jump into that warm, delicious, cozy bed. You have to stop and moisture. If you moisturize, but still get dry, then its time for a deep exfoliation. Your dead skin layer may be preventing the moisturizer from doing its job. According to the American Skin Association, "apply moisturizing creams, emollients, or moisturizers several times a day." Don't skip this essential and crucial step.
